In situ measurements are mainly carried out in the vicinity of nuclear power plants and research centers (PSI and CERN), as well as in monitoring persistent cesium-137 contamination from atmospheric nuclear tests and the Chernobyl accident.

The FOPH’s soil and grass sampling plan provides for the analysis of samples taken in the vicinity of Swiss nuclear power plants as well as the analysis of reference sites outside the influence of potential releases from the plants.
